Recovering From Mistakes and Distractions

Mistakes are part of the game. It's how well you recover from them, that's the mark of a great player.

Mistakes and distractions are part of every game and really with everything we do. We can choose to let it consume us or we can choose to let it go.


Here are some things you can do to help you refocus from a mistake or distraction.

a. Define it. Own the mistake or distraction in one word or phrase. If you can’t define it you can’t own it.

b. Reset with 3x4 breathing. There are three steps to breathing, breathing in, holding the breath, and breathing out. Take a moment to breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 second, breathe out for 4 seconds. Reset your brain by resetting your body. Even in a sport like basketball, there are moments of stopped play to take a breath.

c. Cue it up, create a cue word like “you got this” to remind you of the little things you’ve worked on to perform at your best and what’s important in the moment.

d. Body language, think about moments when you are performing at your best. Stand tall and confident like you do in those moments.


These are just the first steps in learning how to refocus and perform at your best.
